IRIS-5D

On 12 June 2025, we opened our doors to the bioimaging community for our very first networking event. The day brought together computer scientists, biologists, imaging specialists, and AI researchers to foster conversations, exchange ideas, and explore how advanced microscopy and machine learning can transform the way we study biology. It was also our chance to share our project and have a feedback from the community, as well as hear about opportunities for collaboration.

A Day of Inspiration

The programme featured four engaging talks from:

Jason Swedlow (University of Dundee)

Davide Calebiro (University of Birmingham)

Hector Basevi (University of Birmingham)

Ales Leonardis (University of Birmingham)

Guests also toured the COMPARE Advanced Imaging Facility, where they got a peak at our cutting-edge microscopes and the AI-driven platform we are building.

In the afternoon, attendees participated in interactive discussions on Software and Hardware Development Priorities and Biological Questions for Phase 2.

What We Learned

Through live feedback, participants told us what mattered most:

Technology needs to be accessible. Participants called for open-source tools, clear documentation, and transparency in AI models.

Biology must drive the technology. Standardized datasets and practical solutions for handling massive imaging data were highlighted as essential.

Our platform was praised for its potential in automation, high-resolution imaging, and applications in drug discovery.

Looking Ahead

This first event set the tone for what we hope will become a growing community around AI-driven bioimaging. We’re excited to take on board the ideas shared, shape the priorities for Phase 2, and continue building together with openness, collaboration, and discovery at the core.
